I told him, “You can tell a lot about a man by his shoes.”

He just shrugged his shoulders.

The laces drew me in like one of those optical illusions by Escher. The one with the staircases. I was just wandering around them. Running in a Mobius strip.

We glance down at people’s feet when we don’t want to look into their eyes. Maybe that’s why he kept his soles in such pristine condition.
